Spring Practicum Student: Leah Roy!

Hey there, I’m Leah! I’m 23 years old, and I’m a second-year Social Work student at Mount Royal University. I’ve been volunteering with youth for about five years now as a youth mentor; working with teenagers has proven to be a fun and rewarding use of my time, and I’m not sure that I’ll ever get tired of it. I love to paint in my free time -  I’ve been painting watercolour portraits for about a year or so now, but I’ve recently taken up oil painting as well. If you see me around, please come up and say hi! (:

What is the best part of your life?
I think the best part of my life in this current season is how much creative freedom I have right now. I’m in this weird space between graduating from school and starting my career, which can be a little daunting, but I also appreciate that I’ll never have this time back. I don’t have too many responsibilities tying me down yet, so I have the time to explore different inspirations and spend time with friends who push me to test my boundaries in all my endeavours.

What do you think about when you’re alone in your car?
I actually space out a lot while I’m driving on my own (which is super dangerous, I know!), and I usually find myself thinking about conversations I had earlier, or things I need to do. I also take the rare opportunity to sing along loudly with my music, since my less than mediocre singing skills don’t afford me a lot of other chances to do so elsewhere.

What would you most like to learn and why?
I would love to learn how to speak Japanese! Growing up, my parents hosted a lot of Japanese students who came to Canada to learn English, and getting to know them made me very interested in Japanese culture. I’d love to go to Japan one day, and hopefully know a decent bit of the language so I don’t get lost or overwhelmed while I’m there.

What is your favourite colour?
If I was forced to pick I’d say purple, but I love anything vibrant and intense and bright. Pretty much anything that draws my attention!

What do you look forward to most while working with Antyx Community Arts?
I am so excited to be working with Antyx because it incorporates two things I enjoy immensely: art and working with youth! I’m looking forward to seeing all the things I can learn in these areas, and experiencing new things that I may not be exposed to in other organizations. I’m really hoping to not only hone my social work skills, but to be a meaningful impact on these teenagers’ lives, and I believe Antyx is the right place to do that.
