Youth Arts Action Central Week 4: Abstract Art and Colour Pallets

Free Calgary after-school program for youth ages 12-18.

Program Description:

This week is focused on how we can represent mental health themes through abstract expression. At times, mental health experiences can be difficult to articulate into words, and so the use of painting as a means to demonstrate our inner world can be beneficial in moving it through the body and onto a canvas. The painting created today will be on display at the Art Exhibit. Show youth various colour pallets and discuss what feelings colors represent. Everyone will choose a pallet that they connect to for their abstract canvas.

Abstract art has a unique voice to be unearthed by both the artist and the viewer. Discuss the composition and process of exemplar pieces. Utilize this discussion as a take-off point for their own pieces. What do you want the viewer to feel?
